Ouija: Origin of Evil
Runtime: 1 Hour 38 Minutes
Ass-o-Meter: -1
Synopsis:
The movie starts with the Zander family scamming an old man and his daughter with a seance. Then the Ouija board gets introduced when the eldest daughter(Paulina) sneaks out to meet some friends. The mother(Alice) catches her daughter playing with the board and brings her home. Alice decides that the Ouija board will be good for business and gets one. Immediately the family decides to break the rules that come with the board culminating with the youngest daughter (Doris) being possessed by a demon or something. The movie ends with the Alice and Paulina confronting the demon possessing Doris.
First Impressions:
Thomas has first saw this movie in theaters when it came out in 2016. While I have yet to seen it based of Thomas’s description i am glad I haven’t. I can’t imagine a movie about a board being very interesting but I guess someone in Hollywood thinks otherwise.
Plot Breakdown:
There was no reason this movie should of even existed. Its hard to talk about the plot because it felt like things just happened for no reason. Like why did the entire family decide on their own that they should play the board by themself even though it was one of the rules. Overall it was a lack luster plot.
Characters & Performances:
None of the characters stand out at all. The actors did fine with what they were given. The writes just made the most forgettable characters imaginable so forgettable that I had to search up their names 5 minutes after finishing the movie.
Writing & Dialogue:
This is easily the weakest part of the movie. The dialog was bland and basic. There is not much more I can say about it.
Direction & Pacing:
The pacing was slow as shit the movie probably could of had a runtime of 40 minutes if they cut all the parts that did not add to the plot.
Cinematography & Visuals:
The CGI looked good for its time period we don’t really have any critiques on it.
Sound & Music:
The sound was alright, just occasionally broken up with the typical loud sound “scare” that is typical with this kind of movie. There really wasn’t a sound track maybe just 1 or 2 songs that the director thought would make the movie “scarier”.
Best/Worst Moments:
Best Scene: When Alice and Paulina tried to burn the Ouija board
Worst Scene: The last scene with Doris running goofily along the ceiling of the asylum.
Most Unintentionally Funny Line: The writing was so bad they couldn’t even unintentionally make a funny line.
Final Verdict:
This movie should not of existed, its amazing that they made two movies about a board. It tried to copy what made other movies in this genre but failed horribly. The title does not make sense because no where in the movie does it portray how the Ouija board come into existence, it seems like the family just went out and bought it from the store and started fucking with it in their house that just so happens to be located on a “Indian burial ground”. The premise is stupid so its no surprise that the movie turned out to be stupid.
